Italy’s Right-Wing Government Announces a Fresh Work Permit Proposal to alleviate Labor Shortages

The Italian government has revealed plans to significantly increase the issuance of work permits for non-EU workers, aiming to distribute 500,000 permits between 2026 and 2028. This move comes in response to urgent labor shortages across multiple sectors, particularly construction, boosting the number from 450,000 permits granted in the past three years.

Many companies continue to struggle to fill vacancies as young Italians show little interest in blue-collar roles. For example, luxury residential projects in Rome expect to return to full operation capacity thanks to the additional permits. Arben Mece, a chartered surveyor at Novalux Construction Company, stated, “We are currently working on three construction sites, but there are not enough workers to complete all projects.

Italy’s aging population combined with an increasing number of citizens seeking jobs abroad places the country’s economic growth at risk due to a lack of labor supply. Estimates suggest that one in three Italian businesses plan to recruit non-EU workers to fill open positions in the near future.
