Iran Wants Russia to Back its Nuclear Negotiations with the United States

Ahead of a second round of negotiations this weekend in Rome, Iran on Friday asked Russia for backing in a potential agreement with Washington about Tehran’s rapidly developing nuclear program.

According to Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, he gave his Russian colleague Sergey Lavrov an update on the first round of negotiations in Oman last week. He also commended Russia for its involvement in Iran’s 2015 nuclear agreement with international powers, which resulted in the easing of sanctions in exchange for Tehran’s nuclear activity cap. Araghchi and Lavrov held a joint press conference in Moscow where they stated, “We are hopeful and we expect Russia to continue its supportive role in any new agreement.

While Iran abandoned all restrictions on its nuclear program and enriches uranium to up to 60% purity, which is close to weapons-grade levels of 90%, the 2015 nuclear agreement fell apart due to Trump’s unilateral departure. Russia is prepared to mediate and support the nuclear negotiations, according to Lavrov.

We are prepared to assist, mediate, and take on any role that the United States deems appropriate and beneficial from Iran’s perspective,” Lavrov stated. According to the Iranian minister, “we proceed from the fact that the only option for an agreement is an agreement exclusively on nuclear issues.”
