Iran Holds A Funeral For Ismail Haniyeh, The Leader Of Hamas, Who Aas Killed
Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, and his bodyguard were slain in an assassination that was blamed on Israel and posed the potential of turning into a full-scale regional conflict. Iran’s top leader presided over the funeral on Thursday.
At Tehran University, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei prayed over Haniyeh’s coffin while Masoud Pezeshkian, the country’s new president, stood next to him.
Later, people could be seen throwing flowers at the coffins as they were driven by a vehicle toward Azadi Square in Tehran on state television.
On Friday, Haniyeh’s remains will be moved to Qatar for burial following the Tehran funeral rites.
Haniyeh traveled to Tehran to be present during Pezeshkian’s inauguration.
He perished in an airstrike that struck Haniyeh’s Tehran home.
Iranian officials stated that the attack is being looked into, but they haven’t given any specifics.
In response to Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7 that started the Gaza War, Israel had promised to assassinate Haniyeh and other Hamas commanders.
The attack took place in the Lebanese city of Beirut, only hours after Israel targeted a senior leader of Hezbollah, Iran’s ally.
Iran backs Hezbollah, Hamas, and other Palestinian resistance organizations operating in Gaza.
