In Cameroon, Voter Registration Closes as Votes Get Closer

The Cameroonian voter registration drive for the 2024 elections has concluded.

The Director of Elections made an official notice stating that registrations were scheduled to end on Saturday, August 31, at precisely 2:00 PM local time.

There was a noticeable late effort by the major political parties to register as many eligible voters as possible. In an effort to increase voter turnout, they concentrated on urging people to register before the deadline.

Parties used a range of tactics to get out the vote in the last days before the registration deadline.

To guarantee that residents 20 years of age and older are registered, several strategies have been implemented, such as door-to-door campaigns, leaflet distributions, and intensive media and digital outreach.

Over 7 million Cameroonian citizens are registered to vote as of the electoral body’s most recent tally.

Legislators in Cameroon enacted a bill in July that extended its mandate by a year, so delaying the legislative elections that were originally planned for early 2025.

It is anticipated that President Paul Biya, who is 89 years old, will contest in the upcoming election.

Some of the principal opposition figures who will compete against President Biya are Maurice Kamto and Cabral Libii.
