Ghanaian Catholics Commemorate Pope Francis With a Requiem Liturgy in Accra

Because he often prayed in public for peace in the continent’s ongoing wars, Pope Francis was adored by many Africans. Ten African nations were visited by him, seven more than his predecessor. A member of the Catholic fraternity Knights of St. John International, George Amponsah Duodu, expressed his admiration for Pope Francis’ unceasing appeal for world peace.
A few Africans are among the candidates as cardinals convene to choose the next pope. Peter Turkson, a Ghanaian, is one of them. He actively contributed to keeping the calm during the 2008 elections, but he has also faced some criticism for his alarmist movie on Islam in Europe in 2012.
Parishioner Ato Class-Peter, who attended the requiem liturgy at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, expressed his anticipation for a church led by an African pope.
Maxima Missodey, a member of another church who attended the liturgy in the late pope’s honour at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, said Francis’ environmental conservation beliefs most moved her. Late last year, Catholics in Accra organised a march against Galamsey, Ghana’s illicit informal gold mining industry that has seriously damaged the environment.
