Ghana Says That at Least 55 People were Killed while Serving Russia in Ukraine

According to Ghana’s foreign affairs minister, at least 55 Ghanaians have lost their lives while defending Russia in its conflict in Ukraine. After visiting the Ukrainian capital to address the situation of two Ghanaians captured on the front lines, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa was speaking.

He claims to have received information indicating that since 2022, at least 272 citizens have been drawn into the battle, claiming to have been “victims of manipulation, misinformation of criminal trafficking networks. According to Ablakwa, the government is “committed to tracking and dismantling all dark web illegal recruitment schemes” active within its borders.

In recent months, an increasing number of African nations have started to learn that their nationals have been tricked into enlisting in the Russian army. On Wednesday, Ukraine’s foreign minister claimed that over 1,800 individuals from 36 African nations had been enlisted to fight for Russia. The majority claim that despite being offered high-paying civilian positions, they were coerced into signing army contracts and dispatched to fight against Ukraine with little to no training.
