Ethiopia Takes Away the Media License of an Independent Outlet Addis Standard

On Tuesday, Ethiopia took away the license of the independent online news site Addis Standard, stating it hurt the country’s interests. This is the latest limit on press freedom. Reporters Without Borders says that Africa’s second most populous country is 145th out of 180 on the press freedom rating.

The Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA), whose director is chosen by the lower house of parliament, said on Facebook that Addis Standard “has been repeatedly disseminating reports that violate media ethics, Ethiopian laws, and endanger the national interests of the country and its people.”

It claimed that Addis Standard had ignored many warnings to “change its course and stop its harmful actions.”So, “the registration certificate of Addis Standard online media has been revoked effective from today, February 24, 2026,” it said. Addis Standard is one of the few independent media sites in the country, and it has around a million followers on X.

It has talked about the situation in Amhara, where rebels have been fighting federal forces for a few years, and in Tigray, a northern region of the country where tensions are rising again and the potential of another conflict is growing. As the legislative elections in Ethiopia approach (early June), the government has begun cracking down on journalists.
