Ethiopia is The First Stop on the Chinese Foreign Minister’s yearly Africa Tour
On Thursday, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed welcomed Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Addis Ababa, the first stop on the diplomat’s New Year’s journey to Africa. The two leaders promised deeper collaboration in trade, infrastructure, energy, and transportation. They also talked about possible cooperation in cutting-edge fields including renewable energy and artificial intelligence.
Ahmed stated on X that Ethiopia and China have had a solid connection for many years and that the two leaders “reiterated our shared commitment to advancing development. Following Ethiopia, Wang Yi will go to Somalia, Tanzania, and Lesotho as part of his tour to the east and south of the continent.
The journey “aims to deepen political mutual trust with all parties… [and] strengthen exchanges and mutual learning,” Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry, stated during a press briefing on Wednesday.
Following Israel’s contentious recognition of the breakaway province of Somaliland, Wang’s visit to Somalia highlights China’s support for Mogadishu. According to Chinese official media, commerce reached $296 billion in 2024, making China Africa’s leading trading partner.
