Ethiopia is Starting Construction on “Africa’s Biggest Airport
The largest airport in Africa and the greatest aviation infrastructure project on the continent, according to Ethiopia, is now under construction near the town of Bishoftu. On Saturday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ceremoniously placed a plaque to commemorate the beginning of construction at the location, which is 45 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa.
The transit hub will be able to accommodate about 110 million passengers annually when it reaches its maximum capacity in 2030. The airport, expected to cost $12.5 billion, will have four runways and accommodate up to 270 aircraft.
That is more than four times the capacity of Bole, Ethiopia’s existing primary airport, which can accommodate up to 25 million travelers a year.
Nonetheless, it is anticipated to achieve saturation in three years.
Abiy stated in a post on X that the goal of this “multi-airport strategy” is to secure Ethiopia’s position as the continent’s top air travel hub. It will improve African connectivity, increase commercial and tourism corridors, and boost Ethiopian Airlines’ worldwide competitiveness, he continued.
