Elon Musk Resigns following a Contentious Tenure in Government

Elon Musk said goodbye to President Donald Trump in the Oval Office on Friday, capping a turbulent term for the multibillionaire businessman. Musk will recommit himself to managing his companies, which include social networking platform X, rocket company SpaceX, and electric carmaker Tesla, after stepping down as director of the Department of Government Efficiency. Trump said that some of his employees will stay in the government and praised Musk for bringing about “a colossal change in the old ways of doing business in Washington.” Musk, dressed all in black, including a “The Dogefather” T-shirt, nodded as the president enumerated contracts that had been terminated during his tenure.

He caused thousands of workers to be forced out or dismissed, leaving a scorching mark on the federal bureaucracy. Some federal agencies, like the U.S. Agency for International Development, which had served as a lifeline for the world’s poor, were dismantled. According to analysts from Boston University, the USAID cuts have already resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. Musk also failed to meet his objectives in spite of the turmoil. He trimmed estimates to about $150 billion in the current fiscal year after vowing to eliminate $1 trillion or possibly $2 trillion in government expenditure. Whether that target has been struck or not is unknown.
