Elon Musk Is Chosen By Trump To Head The Government Efficiency Department
Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will head the new Department of Government Efficiency, a non-governmental organization dedicated to reducing federal waste and optimizing operations, according to a Tuesday announcement from Donald Trump. Musk and Ramaswamy will collaborate with the Office of Management and Budget to promote reforms and introduce an entrepreneurial mindset into government.
Musk intends to publicly record all activities for transparency, including a leaderboard to draw attention to wasteful tax expenditures. Musk has dubbed the agency “Doge” after Dogecoin. Ramaswamy took to social media to pledge his support for the project.
Musk and Ramaswamy plan to finish their work by July 4, 2026, but are immune from federal disclosure rules because they are not government workers. Trump wants to give the country a smaller, more effective government as a 250th anniversary present.
Reactions to Musk’s call for a $2 trillion reduction in government spending have been conflicting. Critics contend that his companies have a history of conflicting with laws that he may now want to modify, while supporters think his presence will lead to significant change.
