Election Violence in Uganda: Bobi Wine’s Ally Detained
Police in Uganda on Thursday detained Muwanga Kivumbi, a senior ally of opposition leader Bobi Wine, accusing him of being involved in violence during last week’s election in a rural area of central Uganda.
Kivumbi, a member of parliament and deputy president of Wine’s National Unity Platform party, is expected to face criminal charges. According to police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, the charges relate to violence in Kivumbi’s constituency that resulted in seven deaths.
The seven people were killed when unidentified security personnel opened fire at Kivumbi’s home in Butambala. Kivumbi later spoke emotionally at their funerals, saying they were innocent victims of violence by the armed forces.
Bobi Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has said he is in hiding after President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner of Thursday’s presidential election. Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, secured 71.6 percent of the vote, while Wine received 24.7 percent, according to official results. Wine has rejected these results, calling them fraudulent.
In a televised address on Sunday, Museveni accused the opposition of attempting to incite violence during the voting process. He claimed those killed in Butambala had attacked police officers with machetes. He also urged religious leaders to guide young people, warning that they could be drawn into violence.
