Congo Reports Fresh Ebola Outbreak in Kasai

Congo has confirmed a new outbreak of Ebola in southern Kasai, with 28 suspected cases and 15 deaths reported so far. Health officials say the first patient was a pregnant woman admitted to Bulape Hospital in late August with severe bleeding symptoms. She died within a week, and soon after, hospital staff and lab workers who had treated her also fell ill.

The National Institute of Public Health declared a heightened emergency this week as suspected cases increased. On Thursday, the Health Ministry officially confirmed that Ebola is spreading again in the region. Provincial authorities initially recorded eight deaths, but the toll rose quickly as more people exposed during treatment or funerals developed high fever, vomiting, and bleeding, classic signs of Ebola.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals. Symptoms often begin with fever, fatigue, and muscle pain, before progressing to severe bleeding and organ failure. Caregivers and relatives are especially vulnerable, and nearly half of those infected in past outbreaks have died. This is the sixteenth Ebola outbreak in Congo since the virus was first identified in 1976. While some outbreaks have killed hundreds, the region remains highly vulnerable to recurring infections.
