DRC: A Stampede at a Music Event Claimed the Lives of at Least Seven People
Authorities in the capital of Congo reported that a stampede at a music festival on Saturday resulted in at least seven fatalities and numerous injuries.
According to Kinshasa Governor Daniel Bumba, the rush happened inside the 80,000-seat Stade des Martyrs stadium in the city center, where famed Congolese gospel musician Mike Kalambayi was playing.
Seven people were reportedly murdered in the turmoil, according to state broadcaster RTNC, while some of the injured were admitted to intensive care.
Authorities stated that an investigation was being conducted into the incident but did not remark on what triggered the stampede. But according to the local music management business that put on the concert, “the security services tried to neutralize some troublemakers,” which is when the commotion started.
The performance included a number of other performers and pastors, and an estimated 30,000 people attended, according to a statement from the management organization Maajabu Gospel.
Large crowds gathered outside the stadium in front of barricades as they waited to enter, according to videos that appeared to be from the scene and broadcast of the event. People were seen running to the center stage inside.
