Doumbouya’s Victory in the Presidential Election is Confirmed by the Guinea Supreme Court
Mamady Doumbouya, the head of the junta, received 86.72% of the vote in the presidential election, which Guinea’s Supreme Court confirmed on Sunday. This validates the preliminary results that were released earlier this week in the wake of the election on December 28, which did not include prominent opposition figures on the ballot. Abdoulaye Yỹ Baldé, the runner-up, received 6.59% of the vote, which was likewise consistent with the preliminary outcome.
As he presented the final election results, Fode Bangoura, the first president of the Supreme Court, stated that Baldé had “voluntarily withdrawn” the complaint he had filed challenging the election outcome.
Doumbouya took a unifying stance in his first speech to the country following the announcement of the official results. There are no winners or losers in today’s world. In a broadcast late on Sunday, the president-elect declared that “there is only one Guinea, united and indivisible” and urged people to “build a new Guinea, a Guinea of peace, justice, shared prosperity, and fully assumed political and economic sovereignty. Mamadi Doumbouya overthrew President Alpha Condé in a coup in 2021. Many saw this year’s presidential election as a way to justify his continued rule.
