After a Distress Call, Greece Rescues 545 Refugees from Crete

A ship carrying 545 migrants sent out a distress call off the shore of Gavdos Island, south of Crete, prompting Greek authorities to launch a massive rescue operation early on Friday morning. In response, the Hellenic Coast Guard sent out three patrol boats, accompanied by three neighboring commercial ships and three Frontex vessels. All of the travelers mostly men from Bangladesh, Egypt, and Pakistan were safely transported to Crete.

The migrants were moved from the port of Agia Galini to a makeshift facility in Rerthymnon’s Latzimas neighborhood, where they will spend the night. In the port of Mytilini, Lesbos island, a migrant is led by a member of Frontex, the European Union’s border security agency, on a ferry.

While preparing the area with mattresses and blankets, local authorities have expressed doubts about its suitability for even temporary lodging. 32 migrants were rescued from a tiny boat and securely transferred to Paleochora in a previous rescue that occurred south of Gavdos.
