Denmark’s Hands off Greenland Anti-Trump Demonstrations Draw Thousands of Participants
Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Copenhagen on Saturday to protest against US President Donald Trump’s renewed push to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
The rally came a day after Trump said he might impose tariffs on countries that resist his plans involving the mineral-rich Arctic island. His remarks sparked criticism and prompted public backlash in Denmark and Greenland.
The protests also coincided with a visit to Copenhagen by a bipartisan delegation from the US Congress. The lawmakers have publicly distanced themselves from the Trump administration’s aggressive rhetoric, signalling that many Americans do not support the idea.
Carrying Danish and Greenlandic flags, protesters filled the square outside Copenhagen City Hall, creating a wave of red and white. Many chanted “Kalaallit Nunaat,” the Greenlandic name for Greenland, as a show of solidarity with the island’s people.
Demonstrations were organised by Greenlandic associations and took place not only in Copenhagen but also in Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense, and Nuuk, Greenland’s capital. Thousands had pledged on social media to join the marches.
