Cape Town Celebrates Culture With the Annual Minstrels’ Carnival

Thousands of minstrels marched, danced, and wowed crowds with brilliant satin costumes in Cape Town’s annual Minstrels’ Parade on Monday. Thousands of festivalgoers lined the streets, cheering as music and rhythm transformed the city into a colorful celebration of culture and history.

According to organizers, around 17 troupes, totaling nearly 20,000 performers, participated in the parade, which is widely recognized as a cornerstone of South African culture and Cape Town’s identity.

Many parade participants view it as an opportunity to share their culture with both locals and visitors. “We like to entertain. Mark, a self-employed performer, noted that many people travel from other nations and places to see the Kaapse Klopse. “So we are actually here to entertain them, to entertain our culture as well in Cape Town.”

Both spectators and artists agree the event has a strong personal meaning for them. “It’s been a Cape Town tradition, particularly for colored people, for many years,” said textile technologist Magdalene Jacobs. “We come here because our parents, our grandparents, our great-grandparents.”
