Boni Yayi, the Former President of Benin, Resigns as Head of the Opposition Party

Thomas Boni Yayi, the former president of Benin, is leaving his role as leader of the opposition Les Démocrates party due to health concerns. He stated that he wished to “fully dedicate this new phase of his life to rest.” He is 72 years old. He promises to give the party’s vice presidents and governing bodies temporary leadership.

However, the party is at a critical juncture when he leaves. Les Démocrates, the biggest opposition party of Benin, lost the January parliamentary elections to President Patrice Talon’s coalition, leaving them without a single seat in the legislature.

A lack of support from mayors and MPs has also resulted in the rejection of the party’s presidential candidate for April. Talon, the president for two terms, is scheduled to resign in April. The ruling coalition supports his hand-picked successor, Romuald Wadagni, who is expected to win the president. Chabi, the son of Boni Yayi, recently departed Les Démocrates following his detention in relation to a purported coup attempt.
