Before the Polls, Kampala was Painted in the Colors of the Ugandan President’s Party
Yoweri Museveni, the current president of Uganda, has campaign posters all over the streets of Kampala, the country’s capital, only days before the general election. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s 81-year-old leader, who has commanded the nation since 1986, is running for reelection.
Museveni’s fans are unwavering despite his advanced age and mounting concerns about his government’s repression of political opponents, violations of human rights, and corruption scandals. The opposition’s pledge of “a new country” presents many unanswered questions, according to Lydia Nansangwawo, vice-secretary of the NRM’s national mobile task force.
“We have no idea what kind of new nation they are referring to. However, we are certain that we love this country, appreciate the security we have, and appreciate what our president has done for us,” she says.
To enable Museveni, one of Africa’s oldest leaders, to run for office, his government has twice amended the constitution to eliminate term and age limits. He was a former rebel who has been credited with fighting HIV/AIDS, fostering economic growth, and stabilizing Uganda. And he is adored for it by people like Flavia Atubera, a shopkeeper.
