DRC: The New Retirement Plan is Available to over 300,000 Public Personnel

A spokesman for the Congolese government said Monday that over 300,000 federal officials are qualified for a new public sector retirement scheme. In 2022, the public sector ministry started a massive retirement push.
Among other things, the government aimed to modernise the government, strengthen the state’s finances, and keep its promises to foreign partners like the International Monetary Fund. 11,000 public servants resigned in that year, but because of financial limitations, the process was put on hold in 2023 and 2024.
Retirements might now start up again. According to local media sites, at a cabinet meeting on Friday, public sector minister Jean-Pierre Lihau unveiled a 10-year plan to fund the procedure. The government will deposit 20 billion Congolese francs, or around $7 million, into a special Central Bank sub-account every month.
Additionally, starting in 2026, banks will have the ability to compensate pensioners ahead of time before receiving reimbursement from the government. Preventing more debt is the aim. The government will appoint a special committee of state actors to oversee the procedure.
