At the Rafah International Crossing, Trucks Delivering Relief for Gaza Wait for Days
Hundreds of trucks wait for Israel to reopen the Rafah border crossing into the Gaza Strip in the Egyptian city of Al-Arish. They are unable to travel at this time, despite carrying essential humanitarian aid. Israel announced ten days ago that it would permit 600 relief trucks to pass the border each day. Less than 100 have been admitted thus far.
We are sitting here in the desert for extended periods of time, as you can see,” aid truck driver Fathy Fahmy adds. Since the beginning of the war, we have operated in Al-Arish in this manner. We deliver a wide range of items, including food, blankets, and clothing. According to the truck drivers, Israel has been purposefully preventing help from reaching the Palestinians, causing a significant amount of food aid to rot in the process.
Another assistance truck driver, Mohamed Mostafa, says, “The source of trouble is that they turn us back several times, and then accept the aid after pressure from the Red Crescent.” And they take a long time just to look at the truck. I once waited for seven months to deliver a single truckload of stuff while waiting in the desert.
