As Things gradually get Better in Omdurman, displaced Sudanese Return Home

As Omdurman, west of Khartoum, shows signs of recovery from nearly two years of war, displaced Sudanese families are returning to observe the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

Residents can now return to their houses after Omdurman was just retaken from Sudanese paramilitary forces. But for many returns, including Awad Zayed, their homes were in ruins, with gunshot holes and other damage.

Despite these obstacles, day-to-day living is getting better over time. Yousef Abdul Qader, a local, observed that although food prices were originally high, markets are returning to normal as a result of roads reopening and supply routes stabilizing. “People are going back to their homes every day, and things are slowly getting back to normal,” he said.

In order to assist returning families, charities are also stepping in. According to communal kitchen manager Gaith Abdul Qader, Omdurman was almost deserted last year, but his staff is now providing meals to dozens of people every day. The Sudanese military is still making progress against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group. As military forces move farther into Greater Khartoum.
