Army Says IS-linked Rebels kill at Least 20 in Attack on a Community in Congo
Local officials reported on Saturday that rebels linked to the Islamic State group killed 66 people in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which has ties to IS, slaughtered civilians in Irumu, which is in the east of the country near Uganda. The invasion happens at a time when eastern Congo’s fight with M23, a different rebel group supported by Rwanda, one of Congo’s neighbours, may be coming to an end.
The United Nations mission in Ituri, eastern Congo, dubbed the raid a “bloodbath. According to Okala’s statement to the Associated Press, “Around 30 civilians were killed between Thursday and Friday, July 11, in the Walese Vonkutu chiefdom, Irumu territory, in Ituri.” “Based on what civil society has told us, the number of civilians killed has gone up from 31 to 66.”
The ADF is an Islamist group from Uganda that works on both sides of the border. Marcel Paluku, the head of a local civil society group, reported that all of the victims, including women, were slaughtered with machetes. We don’t know how many people are being held hostage.
