Haiti: Locals are Still Being Terrorized by Gangs

Residents of Port au Prince, the capital of Haiti, are working diligently to clean up the remnants of their homes in the Solino neighborhood. Gangs took control of the region around a year ago, but in recent weeks they abruptly left and told the locals they were free to return. Some have lost their whole means of subsistence.

Entrepreneur Gerald Jean is one of them. “I am an entrepreneur,” he declares. I ran a hardware store, a funeral home, an apothecary called Botanica, and a house rental business. All I have had in November since November 13 or 14 are sandals and a pair of slacks.

Some residents, like Marie-Marthe Vernet, are heeding the police’s advice that it is dangerous to return to the neighborhood. I will never come back to live here again. She declares, “I refuse to live with Viv Ansanm (gang).”

Others have disregarded the warning because it is challenging to return home because gangs control nearly every aspect of the metropolis. A bakery manager named Louisnor Felix is one of them. They shattered everything and took what they could, and it’s pretty serious. “They broke and left behind what they couldn’t take,” Felix claims. Armed gangs currently control an estimated 90% of Port-au-Prince and have strengthened their hold on Haiti since President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in 2021.
