Anger as Militants in Eastern Congo Murder a Number of People in Two Assaults
According to Congolese officials, 89 people have been killed in two attacks on civilians in eastern Congo by a rebel group associated with Islamic State. Late Tuesday, officials reported that 18 people were killed in a separate incident in Beni on Tuesday, and 71 people were slain at a burial in Nyoto on Monday. The country’s North Kivu area was the scene of both attacks.
The Allied Democratic Force, or ADF, was responsible for the strikes, which were the most recent in a string of large-scale assaults on residents in the unstable area. Numerous intricate conflicts plague the area, including a rise in attacks by the ADF, which operates along the Congo-Uganda border.
The ADF has engaged out widespread attacks on civilians in recent weeks after pledging loyalty to the Islamic State group early 2019. The military forces of Uganda and Congo have been working together to combat the gang.
It has helped “the North Kivu Provincial Government in managing the humanitarian consequences of these terrorist acts,” the administration stated in a statement. According to the statement, “it remains resolutely committed to continuing military operations and the hunt for terrorists, which have already resulted in the release of civilian hostages, the loss of several of their bases, and the neutralization of several of them.
