Alassane Ouattara of Ivory Coast Receives 89.77% of The Vote to Gain Reelection

According to preliminary results released Monday, Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara has won a fourth term with 89.77% of the vote, after an election that saw a historically low turnout and the disqualification of his primary political opponents.

His closest opponents, former First Lady Simone Gbagbo and former Commerce Minister Jean-Louis Billon, both admitted defeat after receiving only 2.4% and 3% of the vote, respectively. In contrast to the bloody 2010 post-election crisis, a calm conclusion was guaranteed when Billon congratulated Ouattara on Sunday and Gbagbo did the same on Monday.

Analysts see the victory as supporting a trend of democratic backsliding and “constitutional engineering” across West Africa. Despite having presided over economic expansion, Ouattara’s new term poses serious succession issues in a country with a violent past.

Although he has promised to develop a new generation of leaders, the nation is uncertain because the ruling party is split and there is no obvious heir. “There was no justification for voting. One disenchanted Abidjani voter said, “Everything was set up for Ouattara to win.
