After the Hurricane, Several were Killed. Melissa Touches Down in Jamaica, Haiti, and Cuba

Hurricane Melissa has unleashed severe devastation across Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica, leaving dozens dead and thousands homeless. The storm’s aftermath on Wednesday revealed shattered communities struggling to recover amid roofless homes, fallen power lines, and flooded streets.

In Jamaica’s St. Elizabeth parish, a massive landslide cut off access to Santa Cruz, turning its streets into deep mud pits. Residents worked to clear water from their homes and recover what little they could. At a local high school-turned-shelter, strong winds tore apart part of the roof. “I’ve never seen anything like this in all my years living here, said longtime resident Jennifer Small.

Hurricane Irma slammed into Jamaica on Tuesday as a catastrophic Category 5 storm, packing top winds of up to 295 kilometres per hour, making it one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic. Though the system weakened as it moved toward Cuba, destruction continued to spread far beyond its direct path.

In Haiti, officials confirmed that flooding killed at least 25 people in the southern coastal town of Petit-Goâve. Mayor Jean Bertrand Subrème said dozens of homes were destroyed when the La Digue River overflowed, with residents still trapped under debris. With limited emergency presence, locals worked on their own to rescue survivors amid rising waters.
