After Criticism, Tiffany Haddish Defends The Zimbabwean Video

After releasing a video of her visit to a shop in Zimbabwe, Tiffany Haddish faced criticism and addressed claims that she was favoring Africans.

The 44-year-old comedian and star of “Girl’s Trip” posted a TikTok video from Harare that showed shelves piled high with vegetables. She expressed her amazement by writing, “They have a grocery store! It’s lovely. She emphasized products like sugarcane, dates, and organic strawberries.

A few people on social media perceived the film as patronizing. “They think we’re chasing lions and zebras,” was the comment left by someone. With the comment, “Tiffany Haddish is surprised that there’s a grocery store in Africa..?,” another person shared the video on Twitter. What is wrong with these individuals?

Haddish retorted, describing how, as a Black American, she had been informed for years that there was starvation in Africa and had even seen pictures of toddlers with flies. She revealed that her friends were afraid to travel with her because they had heard stories of the brutality and war in Africa. Haddish claimed that upon arriving in Zimbabwe, the reality moved her to tears, in stark contrast to the inaccurate representation she had grown accustomed to in the United States.

Several users acknowledged the false beliefs about Africa and endorsed Haddish. “Thanks Tiffany Haddish, some Zimbabweans like us understand where you are coming from,” said one person in a comment.
