After a Student was Killed in a Drink-drive Accident, British Rapper Ghetts was Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison

After confessing to killing a student while driving while intoxicated and at a fast speed, British music artist Ghetts received a 12-year prison sentence. Justin Clarke-Samuel, the rapper’s real name, entered a guilty plea to causing death by unsafe driving. Judge Mark Lucraft KC sentenced him to 12 years in prison and a 17-year driving ban at London’s Old Bailey.

Yubin Tamang, a 20-year-old Nepalese student, was hit while crossing the street and died two days later. Prior to the crash, Clarke-Samuel was driving at a high pace, one and a half times the legal alcohol limit, and failing to stop at six red traffic lights, according to prosecutor Philip McGhee, who testified in court. After the collision, he did not contact emergency services.

Sharmila and Bikash Tamang, Tamang’s parents, stated their “hearts were broken beyond repair” in a statement that was read outside the court. They claimed they could not forgive Clarke-Samuel, but they were relieved that he had entered a guilty plea. Judge Lucraft praised the rapper’s charity endeavors and “genuine remorse,” but he claimed that these were overshadowed by the young man’s tragic decision to drink and drive.
