After 65 Years, France Closes its Final Military Installation in Senegal

The formal handover ceremony, which concluded France’s 65-year involvement in Senegal, was presided over in Dakar by General Mbaye Cissé and Pascal Ianni, Chief of the French Command in Africa.
This is a major turning point in the rich and long military history between our two countries.” General Cissé stated during his remarks during the gathering. He pointed out that the militaries of France and Senegal had “defined new objectives” in order to “give new meaning to the security partnership” between the two nations.
“The Senegalese military are looking towards preserving the many achievements made in their search for operational autonomy,” he said. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced in December that his administration will endeavor to eradicate the foreign military from Senegal by 2025.
Following mounting criticism of Senegal’s neo-colonial influence, which culminated in the burning and looting of many French-owned businesses during large-scale protests in 2021, the statement was made. Sovereignty does not tolerate the presence of military bases in a sovereign nation, and Senegal is an independent nation,” Faye told AFP.
