According to a Legal Specialist, Israel and US Bombings in Syria Run the Risk of Causing More Instability
As its troops moved farther into Syria, Israel launched a barrage of heavy airstrikes across the country, according to a Syrian opposition war monitor on Tuesday. The Israeli defense minister also declared that his forces had destroyed Syria’s navy.
After President Bashar Assad was overthrown, Israel admitted to advancing into a buffer zone within Syria. However, it was still unclear whether Israeli troops had crossed that boundary, which was set up over 50 years ago. Israel denied that it was moving toward Damascus, the capital of Syria.
In an effort to prevent “most of the strategic weapons stockpiles” in Syria from ending up in the hands of terrorists, the Israeli military reported on Tuesday that it has launched over 350 attacks in the past 48 hours.
Air defense systems, military airfields, missile stockpiles, and several weapons manufacturing facilities in Damascus and other cities were among the targets. Overnight and into Tuesday morning, Associated Press reporters in the capital heard a lot of airstrikes.
“Israel is launching bombs. For the first time since 1973, Israel has crossed the 1967-held occupation line with tanks. It appears that it may use the current disarray to seize additional land from Syria. This would have a destabilizing effect since any forces that finally surface and prove to be powerful enough will challenge that in the future. According to Mary Ellen O’Connell, a professor of law and international peace studies at the University of Notre Dame, “that is a recipe for further destabilization.”
