A Village in South Africa Awakens to the Sound of an Elephant seal Limping Through the Streets

Early on Tuesday, a big elephant seal in a South African coastal town was spotted speeding along a street after taking a wrong turn. This startled the locals and prompted a rescue attempt to return him to the ocean. The two-ton seal, identified as a young male by an animal protection group, was travelling through a Gordon’s Bay community close to Cape Town.

Residents emerged from their homes and took films. Police and a nearby security firm parked patrol cars around the seal in an effort to keep him contained. He slid loose, crossed a road and continued up a sidewalk after resting his enormous head on the bonnet of one car and partially climbing over another. After a while, the seal came to a rest beside a mall.

Animal welfare experts were concerned that he may get tired and dehydrated since he was too far from the water to find his way back. He weighed about two tonnes, according to their estimation. The size of an elephant seal can double. The seal was drugged by a group of marine wildlife experts and a municipal veterinarian, who then led him onto an animal transport trailer so he could be sent back to his native harbour.
