A New Era: Xi’s Goals for the Growth of the China-African Partnership
The 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation began on Wednesday, and some fifty African leaders are in Beijing.
Chinese President Xi Jinping recommended to the assembled African leaders on Thursday that all diplomatic connections between China and the African countries be elevated to a “strategic” level.
China will unilaterally and voluntarily expand its market. We have made the decision to grant zero-tariff treatment for 100 percent tariff lines to the Least Developed Countries with diplomatic ties to China, which includes 33 African nations,” he declared.
China has become a powerful force in Africa since the China-Africa forum was founded in 2000.
As part of Xi’s Belt and Road strategy, development banks have lent money for infrastructure projects like roads and trains, while Chinese corporations have invested heavily in mining to secure the materials necessary for their industries.
After nearly 70 years of progress, Xi addressed the leaders and declared that the connection between China and Africa was “at its best in history.” He also pledged to strengthen the relationships generally in order to establish “an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era.”
