Spain’s El Hierro is Dealing With a lot of New Immigrants

About 3,000 people have arrived on the island of El Hierro in the Canary Islands, Spain, since the beginning of October. A lot more people are coming to the small island in the Atlantic, which is home to about 11,000 people. They are coming along the Atlantic migration route.

At the port of La Restinga, boats bringing migrants keep coming in. Maritime rescue services say that on October 22, more than 400 people arrived on the island on four boats that left from the coast of Africa.

Some locals are worried about the rise because they think it will put more stress on the area’s resources and infrastructure. “There are a lot of people coming; it’s not just 20 or 30.” There have been days when 500 have shown up. Luis Andres Gonzalez, owner of a bar at La Restinga port, says, “Either we have to stop all this or I don’t know how we’re going to handle it.” A French person who has lived on the island for four years also says that some locals are angry, especially about how much water costs and how people think that migrants get free help.

Migration has also become a major issue in Spain’s politics, ahead of the early general elections set for November 29. The crisis in Ceuta, which started when a lot of migrants from Morocco came in July, has already made the opposition more critical of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s policy on immigration.
