Rights Group Eastern Libya Authorities Carrying out Executions

Human Rights Watch on Wednesday accused eastern Libya’s military authorities of killing at least 31 civilians since late August. They were the first reported executions in the country since 2010 and followed what it termed as “grossly unfair” military tribunals.

The rights group also alleged at least 50 other detainees held at Gernada military jail are at risk of being executed at any moment by Libyan Arab Armed Forces. It said the army of General Khalifa Haftar has been executing them after secret trials based on confessions purportedly obtained under torture.

Most of the individuals were captured in the cities of Derna and Benghazi during the armed confrontation between Haftar’s forces and other armed groups between 2014 and 2018. Human Rights Watch urged on the army to immediately stop the executions and to institute a moratorium on the death sentence.

Libya has been plagued by bloodshed and instability since the toppling of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Libya currently has two governments, one internationally recognised located in the west in Tripoli, and a competing administration in the east backed by Haftar.
