Suspects From Multimillion-Rand Drug Labs Appear in a South African Court

In relation to the uncovering of a multimillion-rand drug production laboratory, thirteen individuals appeared in South African court. The suspects, who include citizens of Mexico, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, are accused of manufacturing drugs, illegally possessing precious metals, illegally possessing hazardous chemicals, and violating the Immigration Act.

They were taken into custody in May after police discovered a large-scale methamphetamine lab northwest of Johannesburg. A court placed the suspects under remand in custody until September 21.

Authorities calculated that the narcotics manufactured were worth about 250 million rand ($15 million). Residents complained of strong chemical scents coming from the remote farm that was disguising itself as a game lodge, which led to the discovery of the enterprise.

In recent years, raids that target persons thought to be connected to cartels have increased in frequency. According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, South Africa is a major center for drug transit due to its location, international trade connections, and growing synthetic drug market.
