Fear Grips the Populace as Haiti Laments the Kenscoff Gang Assault Victims

On Sunday, hundreds of mourners flocked to a church close to the capital of Haiti to bury the victims of a vicious gang attack that left over 50 people abducted and at least 47 dead. Fears that fragile security achievements are being undone by escalating violence have been rekindled by the killings.

As coffins arrived, the church in Kenscoff, an agricultural town southwest of the city, was crowded with grieving families and locals. Gospel music filled the church as mourners wiped away tears, lifted their hands, and screamed out throughout the poignant ceremony. Dozens of people were compelled to stand outside and see through the windows as the community paid tribute to the dead because the building was so packed.

A mother, a father, and their son were among the dead, along with a 70-year-old man whose body gang members allegedly set on fire.At least 47 people were killed, and around 50 were abducted when armed men raided Kenscoff in the middle of the night on August 23. The assault is one of the biggest mass kidnappings in Haiti in recent memory, and it has severely alarmed locals who had started to think that security was getting better.
