Philippe, a French Presidential Candidate, Promises to Restrict Immigration to Mayotte
Edouard Philippe, the former prime minister of France, promised to tighten immigration restrictions to the French overseas territory if he is elected president next year during a visit to Mayotte on Friday. “That is why I have proposed taking back control by shutting off all the valves that can fuel immigration to the territory of Mayotte,” said Philippe, the founder and candidate of the center-right Horizons party.
This means halting, for the duration of the next five-year term, all asylum applications that could be made on the territory, halting, for the duration of the term, applications relating to family reunification, and halting all factors that justify or could justify foreigners submitting a request to enter the territory of Mayotte.”
Political tensions have historically been a result of immigration. In 2018, a nationwide strike over a contract to let the free movement of people from Comoros brought Mayotte to a stop.France initiated the contentious Wuambushu operation in 2024 with the goal of expelling unauthorized migrants, many of whom were Comorans. To improve security and quality of life for Mayotte residents, Paris sent over 1,800 security personnel to the island.
