As The First Senate President of Benin, Talon is Back in the Public Eye
Months after leaving office, Patrice Talon, the former president of Benin, was chosen as the nation’s first Senate president. Despite leaving office after two terms as president, Talon is in charge of an important institution thanks to the new upper house, which was established by a constitutional amendment.
With 24 of the 25 votes cast and one blank ballot, Patrice Talon was chosen on Thursday as the first president of Benin’s Senate. Within a week after the upper chamber’s official installation in Porto-Novo, he will begin his five-year mandate.
The administration claims that the November 2025 constitutional amendment that created the Senate is intended to improve political stability, national cohesion, and the operation of state institutions. Former heads of state and other individuals chosen by President Wadagni comprise the 25-member Senate.
Former presidents Thomas Boni Yayi and Nicéphore Soglo are among its members, though Soglo was unable to cast a ballot due to illness. In his inaugural speech, Talon promised to make sure the Senate runs well and to use the nation’s recently established upper body to advance democracy, peace, political stability, and national unity.
