A Brazilian Company Utilizes hair to Help Clean up Oil Spills and Pollution

These sausage-shaped gadgets represent breakthrough technology. Human hair filters are carefully placed over the Bom Jesus inlet in Guanabara Bay. An orange barrier on the ocean already prevents rubbish from reaching the mangroves. These hair filters also have oil-blocking properties.The concept is that the oil that flows here is absorbed by that hair barrier, which is tied to the orange waste barrier, which floats, and we utilize it to support the Fiotrar barrier,” says Ana Beatriz Gonçalves, an environmental engineer in charge of the new barriers’ monthly upkeep.

Fiotrar, a Brazilian non-governmental organization, is leading the project to install the filters. Mariana Robrahn describes how it works in a laboratory at the Federal University of Rio. So we utilize these hairs to stuff all of these sausages. We use different types of people’s hairs, and we can construct these filters, like the one you just saw in Guanabara Bay, to prevent oil, biodiesel, and other pollutants from entering the water,” adds Robrahn.

It (pollution) arrives over many days, and our barrier can stay in the sea for up to four months, keeping pollutants from boats, unlawful dumping, and other types of pollution,” says chemist Caroline Carvalho.
