After an Arrest Death Causes Unrest, Meloni Orders a Thorough Investigation

While vehemently denouncing violent altercations that resulted in the injuries of numerous police officers, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has demanded a thorough investigation into the death of a man during an arrest in Bologna.

Abderrahim Fakir, who was born in Morocco, passed away on Sunday after police responded to allegations of a man acting violently and causing damage to a car in the Pilastro neighborhood of the city.

In a widely circulated video, cops are seen pinning Fakir face down while he constantly claims he is having trouble breathing before going limp. Police have confirmed that body-camera footage will be given to investigators, and prosecutors have opened a probe.

Protests in central Bologna were triggered by the incident, and they descended into violence. After demonstrators tossed bottles, chairs, and firecrackers, police responded with water cannons and tear gas, injuring 56 officers, according to the police.

Meloni stated that the truth must be found “without prejudice and without leniency,” but he also charged that those responsible for the violence were taking advantage of the tragedy to incite conflict.
