MSF Warns of ‘Serious Gaps’ in the Ebola Response in DR Congo

The medical charity MSF, known by its French abbreviation, stated that the actual scope of the disaster in the central African country remains unknown, despite major response efforts.Kate White, MSF’s emergency medical coordinator in the DRC, stated that the Ebola disease outbreak is exceeding the response effort after one month. The extent of the disease’s spread remains unknown, according to the speaker. What we do know is that most treatment centers in Ituri province are overburdened; many of our patients arrive late in the disease, and the majority were never recognized or monitored as contacts prior to seeking care.”

According to the World Health Organization, 782 Ebola cases have been confirmed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including 181 deaths. An additional 19 cases, including two deaths, have been recorded in neighboring Uganda.

MSF warned that the true figures were likely much higher. There are no recognized vaccinations or treatments for the Bundibugyo strain of the virus that is causing the present outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s northeastern Ituri region, with cases also reported in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. The virus, which spreads by intimate contact and bodily fluids and can cause lethal hemorrhagic fever, is thought to have been spreading quietly for weeks before the epidemic was disclosed.
