Kemi Seba will Stay in Jail as the Hearing is Postponed
Kemi Seba, an anti-western and pan-African activist, will stay in custody after his court hearing was postponed on Wednesday. He is wanted in Benin on charges of inciting rebellion after supporting a coup attempt in December. Seba’s lawyer has refuted the charges, calling them overblown. So there’s this environment built about how dangerous the man [Kemi Seba] is, yet he hasn’t been charged with any type of hazardous or violent crime. So I believe the State is doing this on purpose, as the affidavits for an immigration charge are rather substantial,” Sinen Mnguni stated.
Seba was apprehended earlier this month in South Africa alongside his 18-year-old son during an undercover police raid. Seba’s lawyer is optimistic that his client will receive the desired conclusion, stating, “So the reason the date is the 11th of May is purely that the State prosecutor is in the High Court in another trial tomorrow.”
But we are sure – even given the charges – that we have a good strong defence to the claims, as well as a solid case for bail, and that our client will be applying, or has applied for asylum in South Africa. The bail hearing has been moved to May 11th, and Seba has also applied for political asylum in South Africa.
