Antonio Guterres demands Respect for the Law on the 80th Anniversary of the ICJ

Antonio Gutteres cautioned that international law was collapsing in front of everyone at a speech honoring the International Court of Justice’s 80th anniversary in The Hague. He urged respect for the law in front of dignitaries assembled in the Court’s Great Hall, stating that “when the law of force replaces the force of law, instability becomes contagious, conflicts spill across borders, economic shocks reverberate around the world, and the most vulnerable always suffer first and suffer most.”

This”Excellencies, we are in a crisis right now, and we have to make a decision between a future driven by raw power and a future governed by the rule of law.” The decision is obvious. Adherence to international law is more important than ever because of the burden on the international system,” he continued.

It occurs while Russia continues to invade Ukraine in violation of an ICJ ruling, further straining the international legal system. Among other things, the court is debating the war in Gaza and climate change.
