Sudan Re-Joins the East African IGAD Group Following a Two-Year Ban

Following a two-year freeze imposed after the regional group authorised a rival paramilitary commander to participate in peace talks, Sudan has declared its full readmission to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

In protest, Sudan withdrew from IGAD in January 2024. The bloc’s invitation to a conference in Uganda for Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo was the deciding factor.

In the middle of its bloody conflict with the RSF, Sudan’s army-aligned government viewed the action as a violation of its sovereignty. Tens of thousands have been killed in the fight, which has been going on since April 2023. It has also caused one of the biggest humanitarian disasters in history and forced 11 million people to flee their homes.

With the RSF holding substantial portions of the country in the west and the south and even establishing an unofficial alternative government, the war has essentially divided the country.
