DR Congo: Authorities Ask for Quiet after Drone Strikes on the Airport

Drones targeted a strategic airport in Kisangani, northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, during the weekend, according to the provincial government on Monday. No one has claimed credit for the drone assault, but local officials suspect the armed M23 anti-government group and its partner Rwanda of being behind it.

The explosive drones carrying explosives targeted the airport on Saturday and Sunday, according to a Tshopo provincial government statement obtained by AFP. Eight enemy drones were neutralised before reaching their target,” the announcement stated.

There have been no casualties reported. According to witnesses who contacted with AFP over the phone on Monday, airport security was beefed up. CAA, the local airline that handles multiple domestic flights to Kisangani each week, had not announced any cancellations. The DRC’s resource-rich east, which borders Rwanda and Burundi, has been plagued by war for 30 years, drawing in various foreign countries.
