Iran Calls EU Armies Terrorist Groups in Response to Their Actions

The declaration comes just a few days after the EU’s foreign ministers agreed to add Tehran’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) to the list of terrorist groups. That choice came after the Islamic Republic’s harshest crackdown on protesters across the country since it was founded in 1979.

In the past few weeks, security forces, particularly the IRGC, have been very violent with protesters. Rights groups say that as many as 30,000 people have perished. Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament and a former Guard commander, made the statement. It will probably be mostly symbolic.

Iran used a law from 2019, which the US used to name the IRGC a terrorist group, to call other countries’ forces terrorist groups as well. The decision comes at a time when tensions are high in the Middle East because US President Donald Trump is thinking about a possible military strike against Iran. Iran has planned a live-fire military drill in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday and Monday. This is the small mouth of the Persian Gulf where a fifth of all oil transport passes.
