Following a Coup Attempt, The UN Head Supports ECOWAS and Benin Authorities
ECOWAS nations intervened to back Benin’s military forces after the country’s coup attempt over the weekend provoked reactions not just in the country’s immediate vicinity. Concern over the nation’s instability has now also been voiced by the UN Secretary-General’s office.
The attempt to unlawfully take power in Benin has deeply alarmed the Secretary-General. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told reporters in New York on Tuesday that the Secretary-General “unequivocally condemns any attempt to undermine democratic governance in Benin, which could also further threaten the stability of the region, calling for full respect for the rule of law and the Constitution.
Our Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simão, is actively engaging with national authorities and other stakeholders, as well as regional and international partners, to support efforts to restore peace and stability in Benin,” he added.
He reaffirmed our commitment to assist national and local organizations in safeguarding constitutional order, in the country and across the region,” Dujarric continued. He is striving toward this goal as well.
