The Death of Opposition Leader Anicet Ekane while in Detention is Denounced by Civil Society

Anicet Ekane, a well-known opposition member and lifelong opponent of President Paul Biya, passed away in state captivity, leaving Cameroon in shock. His passing has generated grief and fury in Yaoundé and beyond.

According to Maître Ngouana Ulrich Juvénal, a defense lawyer representing Ekane, legal teams were told early this morning: “We were contacted at 7 am and raced to the national gendarmerie’s medical center. When we arrived, we were greeted by Honorable Nitcheu and Professor Maurice Kamto, our colleagues. There we found Ekane’s lifeless body and had to come to terms with the awful news.

According to reports, Ekane’s condition had gotten worse in the days before his passing. “When we last saw him on Tuesday, he was terribly unwell, scarcely able to speak. He insisted on seeing his pulmonologist and sought transfer to a hospital for adequate therapy,” said Ngouana.

Civil society groups have condemned Ekane’s imprisonment. Cyrille Rolande Bechon, Coordinator of the NGO New Human Rights, described the announcement as “a shock to civil society. For more than thirty days, Ekane was arbitrarily detained, which was a blatant breach of both Cameroon’s international obligations and fundamental rights.
